Balto is a dog who lives outside of Nome, Alaska in 1925. He is the lead dog for Gunnar's sled dog team. When two children come down with diphtheria in Nome the only way to get medicine to the town is by dog sled. Balto and his team travel the last 53 miles of the 800-mile route to deliver the medicine to the town.
