Re: Was Helen Keller the Greatest American?
I think that she was a good american not because she was amazing because she was deaf and blind but because of what she taught people and for what she did for people like me who are blind. Laura Bridgman, who in case you don't know came before Helen Keller learned how to talk with her hands using the manual alphabet as well and she doesn't get any recognition because she's not as amazing or outgoing. as for helen having a bad childhood, I agree with that although her parents felt too sorry and scared of her to dicipline her. But I agree, she did have it bad until Miss sullivan came. I know this because I was a bad little kid who threw tantrums and didn't get diciplined much. I wasn't as severely disabled as Helen though.

Re: Was Helen Keller the Greatest American?
I think that Helen Keller was an excellent American, but I am not sure about the "Greatest"- that will take awhile to decide. And I do not feel this way just because she was blind, yet accomplished, or smart. I feel this way because there is a part of her that is hidden from most of us- she did not only work for the awareness and welfare of the blind. No, she also worked extensively for the Socialist movement, anti-war efforts and the expansion of Unions. This is the work that she wanted to be remebered for, yet it is the work History has covered up in an effort to make her a hero, that is wrong. Please go research this part of her so you can fully understand how great of an American she truly was.
